The Hot Girl Walk

What exactly is the fitness trend, ‘The Hot Girl Walk’ that has been taking over social media?

I’ve only just heard about the ‘Hot Girl Walk’ so I may be a bit late to the party.    If you haven’t seen this trend on on social media then it involves the following:

A  2 to 4 mile walk a day listening to an upbeat playlist or an uplifting podcast.

The purpose is to build your confidence by allowing yourself to only think of 3 things:

  1.  Things you are grateful for
  2.  Your goals and how you are going to achieve them
  3. How hot you are! (I know!)

It has taken the US by storm where you can now join groups of women to walk with such @hotgirlwalkboston, @hotgirlwalkmiami, @hotgirlwalk, @hotgirlwalkpalmbeach, @hotgirlwalkftlauderdale and now even @hotgirlwalkparis.  I haven’t yet found one of these groups in the UK but I’m sure there will be one in the future….maybe Sandbanks!

However, I do feel a bit old for this as it looks like a young 20 somethings trend but at 48 years old who says we can’t set one up for the young 40’s & 50’s! It’s only 4 miles!

How it came about

It started out as a TikTok trend led by influencer and student Mia Lind (handles – @miaivylind (Instagram) and @exactlyliketheothergirls (TikTok)) during the pandemic as a way of combing exercise with positive thinking.  Like most of us during lockdown Mia went on her daily walk but created a one beneficial to her during this time and shared the details on TikTok. She created the name ‘Hot Girl Walk’ as she thought people viewed walking for exercise as not ‘real’ exercise and so rebranded it to sound more appealing.

The Benefits

It is not only meant to help you physically, but also help your mental and emotional wellbeing……a meditative walk whilst getting your recommended 10k steps in!

It’s a time for peace and physical activity without having to feel self conscious in a gym.  And the best bit is, it’s free.  All you need are some trainers, headphones and a positive mindset.

If you started having negative thoughts Lind recommends turning the volume of the music or podcast up so that it drowns them out. And it doesn’t end with the walk.  If you can fit the walk into your morning routine “You take that energy and you carry it with you throughout the whole day,” says Lind.

Any exercise boosts your endorphins which can benefit your mood, reduce anxiety, stress and worrying, and overall improve your mental health and by adding positive self talk is Positive self-talk will also uplift your mood and affect your overall mental health for the better.

When to do it

Anytime to suit your day! I usually walk in the morning to my local coffee shop a couple of km away and then head on down to the beach.Everything is always easier with caffeine!  And if you always drive to your local coffee shop then why not walk instead. There are no restrictions.  It’s an exercise that fits into your schedule.

Conclusion

It’s a time for peace and physical activity without having to feel self conscious in a gym.  And the best bit is, it’s free.  All you need are some trainers, headphones and a positive mindset. It is a simple, achievable and realistic way to exercise for just about anyone. So what are you waiting for?  Get out there and create a new habit!
